Apparently, Shackleton put this ad out when he wanted to recruit a crew for his Antarctic Expedition. Some sources say this ad was never published, some say it did (see this video of Brian talking about it). We will never know. But to us at C4E, this is very relatable. Each word is.
We are on a mission to discover our Mahabharata, can pay small wages, offer constant danger. But if we make it, we will have all the glory and honor.
With that, thank you for your interest in working with C4E.
I am Saurabh, one of the founders at C4E and I will be your chaperone while you see if we are right for each other. This is our careers and hiring page and each person that comes into C4E has to cross this “roadblock”.
It’s imperative that you see this document before you talk to anyone at C4E for any role and in any career.
Please note the following…
- Even though we are a small team, we are VERY choosy. The hiring process is needlessly long. And you will have to bear with us. And this process is there for a reason. If you are not willing to go through this, we may not be able to work together. We are very highly indexed on hard work and rigor.
- You will have to fill this form at some point in time. In the form, you will have to make a video about one thing you love. If you are not comfortable with that, we may NOT be the right place.
- We try to be as direct, transparent and open. We will often mention the roles, the money on offer and other things very clearly.
- We try to be fair and we do NOT negotiate. If you find those numbers less or work more, please do NOT apply.
- We are highly indexed on writing – even for a non-writing role. If you think writing is boring, we encourage you to NOT apply.
- Please start by reading this document – Why not work with us – link.
Here’s a list of things you will have to read / consume / internalise / ready to debate / consider before you consider C4E as your career and life. All these are mandatory.
- C4E Culture Book
- On the kind of people we’re looking to work with – link
- A video podcast on culture (76 mins) where I am talking about the kind of company we want to build
- Sam Altman on hiring (46 mins). You can see at 1.5X speed.
- Sam Altman and Vinod Khosla – How to Build Future (33 mins).
- Sam Altman on How to be Successful
- David Perell on serendipity
- Derek talking about How to Start a Movement. Our work will require us to create movements.
- If you want to join us for “growth”, do read this tweet
- On how Naval recruits (we may choose to not subscribe to his ways, but we resonate with this). Read the full thread
- A thread on Warren Buffet’s talk. And think, if you could invest in a friend and get 10% of their income for life — who would you pick
- Paul Graham on Resourcefulness. If you are NOT resourceful, we aren’t your ideal match.
- A thread on Hanuman and his relationship with Ram (a guru and a student, a mentor and a mentee).
- One of the most nuanced views on the 70-hour-week debate by Vaibhav – link
- This post by Sahil – we encourage you to come back with something like this.
- A note from Naval on being high-agency. Another thread on being high-agency – link.
- Anu on Taste – link.
- This document from Mr Beast on how he and his team work – link.
- We’re not a company, we’re a village – link.
- Where we’re headed and what is our Mahabharata.
- Dan Mall on compensation and getting paid what you’re worth.
- What is SoG? This may not be relevant for a lot of roles but its important that you know this.
- Work With SG – A lot of what happens at C4E is dictated by my quirks and thoughts. You must know what you are signing up for.
- Do 100 things by Visa, and a video by Anshika on Visa’s note (please see this after you’ve seen the previous link)
- This thread full of wisdom from Kevin Kelly – a man that we all look up to!
Finally, when you join us, you make C4E your home. And that means we become your second priority (after family and health). We may not be able to offer a great work-life balance. And I know this may not work for a lot of people and we are ok to miss out on those folks. In fact, making anything your second priority is a big decision – and it is either a hell yes, or a hell no. Unless its a hell yes from you, please don’t consider us.
If you don’t understand these, or if you dont subscribe to anything that I have listed in the documents above, there are odds that things will not work between us. Please do not apply and save each other time 🙂
If you do, however, agree with things that I have mentioned above, I INSIST and URGE that you apply. We are probably destined to work together and it would allow us to live an engaged, fulfilling and enriching life! Here’s the form.
Over to you!
Thanks,
Saurabh Garg / C4E
PS: This form is needlessly long. The intent is to get only those people who can go thru the pain of filling out a form! There are 20+ questions. Some people take 20 minutes to fill this. Some take a few days. You choose your speed. One of the people that we recently met told us that it took them 3-4 hours and an existential crisis 😀
PPS: We have taken liberal inspiration from people while designing this. Some of them include Ankur Warikoo, Utsav Somani, and more.
PPPS: Please fill this out from a computer (and not an iPad or a phone). A lot of people have mentioned that they are unable to do so from a mobile device.
